How can I become a Christian?

Answer: The first step is understanding what the term “Christian” means. Believers in Christ have adopted the term “Christian” and use it to identify themselves as followers of Jesus Christ. A simple definition of a Christian is a person who follows Jesus Christ. Not just a member of a Church, or religious organization.

Why should I become a Christian?
Jesus Christ said, He did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45). So – why do we need to be ransomed? Think about it, no one taught us how to lie, cheat or even steal, right? We need someone to help us if we are honest with ourselves.

What is the definition of ransom, A ransom is a payment that must be made in exchange for ones freedom or release. We hear this term today in references to kidnapping, when someone is kidnapped and held until a ransom is paid for their freedom.

Why did Jesus pay our ransom? - to free us from the bondage of sin!

  1. Because sin has consequences, physical death, eternal separation from God. Because we are all sinners, Jesus came and died for us (Romans 3:23),
  2. Because of sin we will face the judgment from God (Romans 6:23; Romans 4:12).

But How did Jesus pay our ransom? By dying on the cross!

(1 Corinthians 15:3; 2 Corinthians 5:21). Jesus’ death sufficiently paid for all of our sins!

  • He (God) came to earth as a human, made of flesh, so He could identify with us and die for our sins (John 1:1,14).
  • As God, Jesus’ death was infinite in value, sufficient to pay for the sins of the entire world (1 John 2:2).
  • Jesus’ resurrection after His death demonstrated that this was the sufficient sacrifice, that He had truly conquered sin, and death.

How can I become a Christian?
God has made it simple to become a Christian! Even a child can do it! All you have to do is receive Jesus as your Savior, accepting His death as the only sacrifice for your sins (John 3:16), Trust Him alone as your Savior (John 14:6; Acts 4:12; Titus 3:5-7).

Becoming a Christian is not about traditions, going to church, or doing good things, even treating your fellowman right. Becoming a Christian is about having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. A personal relationship with Jesus Christ, through faith, is what makes a person a Christian.

It must be a commitment - one that affects your life. If there is no change in you, your thoughts, actions or desire to spend time with Him, chances are you are trusting in something other than Gods Simple Ransom! It is not reforming, a Church or even giving, it's a "New Birth"! This always brings about a change in one's life!

Are you ready to become a Christian?
If you are ready to become a Christian by receiving Jesus Christ as your Savior. Remember these thoughts:

  • Understand and believe that you have sinned and are worthy of judgment from God!
  • Understand that there must be a change of mind about your sin, the Bible calls this "Repentance of sin" - our wickedness.
  • Understand and believe that Jesus took your punishment upon Himself, He died in your place!
  • Understand and believe that His death was the sufficient sacrifice to pay for your sins!

If your answers to these four statements are yes, then simply place your trust in Jesus as your Savior. Receive Him, by faith, fully trusting in Him alone.

All one needs to do once he understands the real meaning of a Christian is to ask for this Wonderful Gift! (Just like the thief on the cross.) (Romans 10:13) You need to make a commitment, a moment you trust in Him alone. Salvation is not hoping but knowing you have done this! Why not make your Moment!

That is all it takes to become a Christian!
